Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance Introduces Innate Skills

Sega and Atlus have revealed some new information about the gameplay for the upcoming release of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. This new edition of 2021’s Shin Megami Tensei V, releasing on multiple platforms with new content and additions, will have one new wrinkle in its gameplay system: Demon Innate Skills.

In SMT V: Vengeance, Demons will have Innate Skills, passives that can bring an advantage not just in battle. Three types of Innate Skills have been revealed, two of which requires a specific setup before the buffs or bonuses can be activated.

  • Blessed Melody: Increases damage when striking a Light weakness for all allies.
  • Four Heavenly Kings: Raises all of your stats when a demon with Four Heavenly Kings is summoned.
  • Demonic Mediation: Patches up relations with a demon whose mood sours mid-negotiation.

Alongside new Innate Skills, SMT V: Vengeance will also add new exclusive skills for demons and new Magatsuhi Skills (more than 20 added in this new release).

For those unfamiliar with the game, SMT V: Vengeance is a turn-based RPG where your party members are, for the most part, ally demons. For those familiar with the Persona series but not SMT- that means your party members are the Personas.

All of the tentpole gameplay features from SMT V naturally are still available in Vengeance which includes the following:

  • Press Turn Combat – exploit an enemy’s weakness and get free turn, stackable up to 8 actions.
  • Magatsuhi Skills – can be used after filling the Magatsuhi Gauge. Skill can range from heals and buffs to heavy damage
  • Demon Conversations – strike a conversation against demons to negotiate with them, earning items or even recruiting them. This includes special demon-to-demon conversations
  • Guest characters- some human characters will fight alongside you, and can summon their own demon allies to fight alongside.
  • Consecutive encounters- another wave of demon appears right after ending a battle. Harder battles but bigger Macca and EXP rewards with increased item drops.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance recently moved its release date a week earlier than previously announced.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is releasing on June 14 for the PS4, PS5, PC (Steam, Windows), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
