Sega announced the Puyo Puyo Global Ranking Series 2025, a global tournament circuit for the tile-matching puzzler game series, Puyo Puyo.
With over 39 million players around the world, the publisher is looking to crown its first-ever world champion Puyo Puyo player.
The tournament circuit consists of a point system gained from competing in various online tournaments. Some of these are officially organised by Sega themselves, while a few already-established competitions from the grassroots Puyo Puyo community are incorporated as part of the Puyo Puyo Global Ranking Series as points-paying tourneys.
Top players from Japan and around the world (all under just one “Other Regions” grouping) with the most points throughout the year will be invited to the Puyo Puyo Gran Prix Final, to be hosted in February 2026. One of these players will be crowned the Puyo Puyo World Champion.

The structure of the Puyo Puyo Global Ranking Series 2025 is much in line with tournament circuits seen in the fighting game community, including the Capcom Pro Tour for Street Fighter 6, Tekken World Tour for Tekken 8, and the SNK World Championship for the various SNK fighting games.
Sega did release a version of the game simply titled Puyo Puyo Esports a while back. And now is the time to declare Puyo Puyo as an esport with the establishment of a publisher-backed tournament circuit.
It’s nice to see another competitive puzzle game series now has an established competitive scene, now more than ever with a publisher backing to boot. Another puzzle game series that regularly crossed over with Puyo Puyo also has a strong competitive community.
