Here’s a wild surprise, we’re getting a new Monkey Island game, to be developed by the creator of the Monkey Island series Ron Gilbert.
Return To Monkey Island will be “the long-awaited follow-up to the legendary Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge”, developed by Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox team, working in collaboration with the newly-revived Lucasfilm Games and Devolver Digital.
Gilbert directly worked on the first two games, a point-and-click adventure following the adventures of Guybrush Threepwood and his pirate-ish antics. There have been more titles since, The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island and Telltale’s Tales of Monkey Island to name them all.
Gilbert even has made it public about not wanting to ever work on a new Monkey Island game, which the trailer pokes fun of. In fact, Gilbert actually announced it a few days ago on April 1 on the same blog, like how he tweeted back in 2013.
So having a new Monkey Island headed by Gilbert and Dave Grossman, two of the three designers that made the original two titles (the other designer being Tim Schafer of Double Fine fame), sounds rather intriguing.
Return Of Monkey Island will be coming out later this year.
