Rage 2 is developed by both id Software of Doom, Quake and Rage fame together with Avalanche Studios, the developers behind Just Cause and the pretty OK Mad Max game. At E3 2018, the game got some more showing after an unfortunate leak led to Bethesda announcing the game early, and more info has been revealed.
For one thing, the game will be running on Avalanche Studios’ proprietary APEX engine which has powered the many Just Cause games before. However, it is noted that Just Cause 3 was not the most optimised of games- on the PS4 for example, the framerate dips really hard when all the chaos and destruction happen on screen.
Thankfully, Avalanche is working on getting Rage 2 to hit 60fps, a staple of the other id Software games, albeit only for the higher performance consoles. Speaking to Eurogamer at a pre-E3 event, Avalanche said that they are targeting 60fps on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
It’s still not ideal- players with just the base console will miss out on the fluidity of 60fps, which definitely benefits during the FPS sections which looks very reminiscent of Doom 2016, but it’s a step forward for Avalanche nonetheless.
Rage 2 will be out sometime in 2019 for the PS4, PC and Xbox One.
