Playstation Asia has announced that it will be charging 6% Sales and Service Tax (6% SST) on all purchases on Playstation Store for Malaysia. This will start at 8AM, January 1st, 2020.
This aligns with the Malaysian government’s push for taxing digital purchases in 2020, which includes other services like Spotify, Netflix, and various services offered by Google.
As such, all prices on the PS Store will be revised from January 4th-6th.
The good news is, this does not affect the price of PS Plus subscriptions (which already had a price hike back in August). Topping up your wallet for use on the PS Store will not be taxed, only the purchases of items from the store.
During the transition period, prices displayed in the checkout page will be charged, regardless of what the listing show.
It’s something we have seen coming, so if you have some last-minute shopping, or want to put in pre-orders for games coming next year, now’s the time to act. The full-price of games equivalent to $60 USD in the US usually translates to RM239. Expect that number to possibly increase to around the RM253 range by next year.
