PS5 Pro Announced – Mid-Gen Upgrade Console Releasing This November

PlayStation, as expected, has announced the PS5 Pro, the mid-generation upgrade of the PS5.

The PS5 Pro will have improved performance that allow higher fidelity graphics while still maintaining 60 FPS. In the 9-minute technical presentation, PS5 Lead Architect Mark Cerny says when players are provided the option between fidelity (graphics) and perforrmance modes, three-quarters of the time players prefer to play on performance mode.

The PS5 Pro, in theory, has the extra graphical power to run games on fidelity mode (i.e. 4K resolution with higher graphics options) while still running at high framerates of at least 60 FPS.

The spec improvements are as follows:

  • Better GPU: 67% more Compute Units with 28% more memory, allowing 45% faster rendering
  • Advanced Ray Tracing: “allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console”
  • AI-Driven Upscaling: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSSR), Sony’s own resolution upscaler solution (like AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS) powered by “custom hardware”
  • 2TB SSD (increase from 825GB of the 1st-gen PS5 and 1TB of the 2nd-gen PS5 “Slim”)

The PS5 Pro also supports PS5 Pro Game Boost which is able to improve supported PS4 and PS5 games (including 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games).

Other features of the PS5 inlcudes:

  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and resolution up to 8K

A few games have been confirmed to have PS5 Pro Enhanced support which includes:

  • Alan Wake 2
  • Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
  • Demon’s Souls
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • The Crew Motorfest
  • The First Descendant
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered

As rumoured, the PS5 Pro is designed similar to the 2nd-gen PS5 “Slim” refresh with a three-lined that seperates the console covers. Width-wise, it’s as slim as a PS5 Slim, but it’s as tall as the OG PS5.

However, the PS5 Pro won’t come with a disc drive though it supports the currently available disc drives for the PS5 Slim. And just like the PS5 Slim, you have to buy the vertical stand seperately as well. It will be bundled with one PS5 DualSense controller and a pre-installed copy of Astro’s Playroom, like any other PS5.

The PS5 Pro will be released on November 7 this year for $699.99 USD (around RM3,010). We will update when we received official pricing of the PS5 Pro in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
