We are reaching the twilight of the current console generation, and Sony is going out with a bang. The PS4 has passed the 100 million sales mark at 106 million units as of December 2019. Playstation Network also recorded 103 million monthly active users.
SIE President Jim Ryan announced the figures at Sony’s CES 2020 press conference, where the PS5 logo was revealed.
“I am very pleased to see that so many PlayStation fans value the unparalleled
entertainment experience on PS4,” said Ryan. “This has been made possible by the support we have from our partners and fans since launching PlayStation in 1994, and I would like to truly thank everyone.”
PS VR is still a small niche, but it too has seen growth- 5 million units sold compared to 2 million from three years ago.
Sales of PS4 games, counting both retail and digital sales, have also reached 1.15 billion.
In short, as the PS4 days are counting down, it proves to be a success for Sony. And there are still big exclusives for PS4 this year- The Last Of Us Part II and Ghost Of Tsushima- which should spike the game sales, and maybe hardware sales, as we wait for the PS5 to arrive.
