Playground Games’ New RPG Is Reportedly A New Fable
A bittersweet handover
We have heard that Playground Games, the team behind the Forza Horizon series, has been expanding and are working on a new RPG. A new report by Eurogamer is suggesting that the new RPG in question is not a new IP, but rather a new main entry in the Fable series.
The Fable series is the Microsoft-exclusive RPG series handled by Lionhead Studios. The studio was shut down as they were still working on Fable Legends, a spin-off asymmetrical multiplayer game, which was also got cancelled.
Eurogamer’s sources suggest that Microsoft wanted to emulate the success of Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn, the single-player action RPG by Guerrilla Games, which sold 3.4 million copies.
For Microsoft to make another Fable game after shutting down the main studio that made Fable (that wanted to make a mainline title) is rather an odd choice. Fable co-creator Simon Carter has mixed feelings regarding this.
“On the one hand it’s great for the UK games industry, and very pleasing that Fable isn’t dead; indeed, it will be lovely to play one as a punter, without coming out in hives.
“On the other hand it is a little curious to get rid of the team that is uniquely expert in making Fable, and then try and make Fable. Fable is a weird game, and a tough one to deconstruct for a new team. That said, the team in question is very talented, and I’m sure they’ll do a fantastic job.”
Microsoft is currently lacking with its first-party exclusives, and a new Fable game might be the thing they needed now. But it would have been cooler to see Playground Games actually made a new IP instead.
So far, this is not official news just yet. But whatever the developers are currently cooking up, it sure sounds more interesting now.
