New Mafia Game In Development

Publisher 2K is currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Mafia franchise. And what better way to celebrate than announce that a new Mafia game is in the works.

Details are scant, but you can expect developers Hangar 13 are behind the new game in the open-world crime game.

“I’m happy to confirm we’ve started work on an all-new Mafia project!” said Roman Hladík, General Manager at Hangar 13 in an interview story on the Mafia game website.

“While it’s a few years away and we can’t share anything more right now, we’re really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories.”

Mafia was first released by Czech Republic-based developer Illusion Softworks in 2002. The studio later was acquired by 2K and rebranded as 2K Czech where they released Mafia II in 2010. The studio was then merged into Hangar 13- the main studio that lead the development of Mafia III released in 2016.

More recently in 2020, the developer remade the original Mafia as Mafia: Definitive Edition.

The interview piece 2K posted sees several of Hangar 13’s longtime veterans including Hladík, who has been part of the Mafia series since the first game and is a fascinating trip down memory lane.

In addition, starting September 1 to 5, the original 2002 Mafia game will be made free to claim on Steam.
