Deathloop, the timeloop-based immersive sim shooter from Arkane Studios continues to impress with its latest gameplay trailer, revealed at the July 2021 State Of Play broadcast.
The trailer continues to iterate the elevator pitch for the game. As Colt, you have to murder eight different targets, the Visionaries, before it hits midnight. Fail to do so, or die, and you’ll respawn back at the start of the timeloop. One of the visionary, Julianna, will be hunting you down, either controlled by a player or an AI.
What’s new is the showcase of the many abilities and weapons you can makes use of in Deathloop. We now see more of Colt’s supernatural abilities that fans of the Dishonored series might see similarities in. You also get to see the interactivity of the world. We see a turret being hacked, as well as Colt taking a component of a turret to lob as a grenade.
If you ever thought that Deathloop might just be a one giant Hitman level as a full game, you’re not far off. The game rewards you for snooping around and finding information from the environment, including ambient dialogue between guards (and floating, cryptic texts) that may prove useful. And of course, there are multiple ways to score the main target kill. The trailer showed that you can either snipe the featured Visionary down (who’s running a party for cannibals, eww) or press a button to send them down into the meat grinder.
Unlike the recent Hitman games however, Deathloop should be fun to go all guns blazing. There’s a good chunk of pure combat being showcased which looks tight. But is that a gun getting jammed in a firefight? There is also a resource, Residue, which lets you keep certain guns and abilities for the next timeloop, as well as an ability to rewind back time to the bit before you die. So, some roguelike elements will be included.
Also, despite Colt being hunted down by Julianna, the pair will keep on bantering over radio calls it seems. Which is a good way to showcase the characters. Colt is really pissed that he keeps on being murdered only to repeat the same day over and over.
Deathloop will be out on September 14 for the PS5 and PC.
