New Gameplay For Avowed Revealed

Obsidian Entertainment kicked off the Xbox Developer Direct 2024 by showing off more of Avowed, their upcoming first-person action RPG.

The segment shows more of the first-person combat as well as general gameplay of this game, set in the same universe as Pillars Of Eternity. And the more of being shown, the more it looks like fantasy The Outer Worlds rather than an Elder Scrolls alternative.

Avowed lets you equip various one-handed weapons where you can mix-and-match to your liking. You can be a spellsword with a wand on one hand and a sword on the other. Do the traditional sword-and-shield loadout, or dual-wield wands. Or carry a gun. Or dual-wield guns. Guns are a thing in Avowed. Of course, there are also two-handed weaponry as well. Weapon loadouts can be switched on the fly for more combat options.

The segment also showed how a side-quest can be played out. And the way the camera work and dialogue box presented really cemented that there is an Obsidian look to this game. It feels very reminiscent to The Outer Worlds, like how Bethesda Game Studios have The Elder Scrolls and post-Bethesda-purchase Fallout have a similar, familiar feel between them.

This isn’t a knock on Avowed, but rather, it’s good that we now can set our expectations accordingly after looking at what’s being presented here.

The Developer Direct segment also goes into detail about the environment design. Avowed’s world is designed to be colourful, and its geometry was intended to have contrasts between the dull and bleak with the occasional beautiful nature.

Avowed is expected to release in fall (Q4) 2024 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. It will also be available on Game Pass.
