New Back 4 Blood Trailer Showcases Its New Twist To The Left 4 Dead Formula: Modifier Cards

Back 4 Blood, the new game from Turtle Rock Studios, is unabashedly a spiritual successor to the co-op zombie shooter Left 4 Dead. But it has at least one trick up its sleeve as showcased in this new gameplay trailer: Modifier cards.

Like the two Left 4 Dead games, Back 4 Blood see you and three other players overcoming a horde of zombies (called “The Ridden” here) as an AI Game Director dynamically adjusts each encounter.

But new for Back 4 Blood is modifier cards, which you can equip on your character, and the Game Director AI can equip as well. Each adds a different buff, debuff and challenge that shakes up your usual run to the next safe house.

The card modifiers are flexible enough that you can create character builds with it like a medic-focused character with healing buffs, a demolition build for bonuses against explosions and more. Likewise, the Game Director’s deck has their own set of cards to shake up the challenge. From unending hordes of zombies to zombies with armour.

You can build your own card deck, or use pre-built ones should you not want to bother with making your own. Cards won’t be sold directly, though new cards may be added post-launch for every player.

Playing Back 4 Blood will earn you progression to unlock cosmetic items like gun and character skins.

Back 4 Blood looks to be a return to form for Turtle Rock, but we will see and find out for sure when it launches on October 12 for the PS4, PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
