Malaysian Ghosts Haunt PUBG Mobile For A Limited Time

PUBG Mobile continues to champion localised content offerings, as the battle royale shooter for mobile devices adds a limited time event based on Malaysian ghosts.

The Malaysian Ghost Stories collection “Jelmaan” (Malay word literally translates to “materialising” but in this context, it means “sightings” like ghost sightings) has gone live on October 8 offering limited time ghoulish items which includes:

  • The Restless Pocong, outfit set
  • The Pocong Shadow, the DBS gun
  • The Pocong Wanderer, a backpack
  • Elusive Pocong, a frying pan

If you ever want to dress up as a Pocong—The Malaysian (and Indonesian) ghost of a hopping corpse wrapped in white funeral cloth as seen in Islamic burial rituals—well, here’s your opportunity.

The full “Pocong” set is a Mythic set and can only be obtained via “the lucky chance event” (read: gacha).

Coincidentally, the arrival of the “Pocong” set after PUBG Mobile’s collab with Volkswagen, which sees the iconic Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle arrived in the game.

The default Beetle, as seen in all of the promos, is yellow in colour, and that’s purposely done so to evoke the image of the Malaysian urban legend of the “Yellow Beetle” (or “Volkswagen Kuning” as it’s referred mostly in Malay).

Some say, if you drive really fast along the Karak Highway in Malaysia alone, one can see a driverless speeding Yellow Beetle chasing behind you, flash the beam lights and overtake. It’s a similar urban legend to Japan’s Turbo Granny, but here it’s an autonomous car rather than a really, really fast old lady sprinting.

Retroactively, the addition of the Beetle is sort of part of the Malaysian Ghost Stories collection. And one more ghastly ghoul is expected to arrive, the Pontianak, the local flavour of vampires.

It’s interesting to see the press release celebrating the Yellow Beetle urban legend, given that it implicates a specific brand. Rather, Volkswagen Malaysia has openly celebrated this.

Eugene Chin Yuan Hao, Country Manager (Malaysia) at Tencent Games, says: “We are always paying attention to our PUBG Mobile community on what makes them enjoy the game even more. To enhance our current Version 3.4, the introduction of these characters can strengthen our mission to make PUBG Mobile made for Malaysians.”

The limited-time event ends on November 11. PUBG Mobile is available on mobile devices.
