One of the most beautiful surprises during this Summer Game Fest so far has to be Skate Story, the indie game by Sam Eng.
Revealed as the last game to be shown on the Devolver Direct 2022 (or the “Devolver Marketing Countdown to Marketing”), Skate Story has you play as The Devil skating down in The Underworld.
However, Skate Story’s depiction of The Underwold is less hellish and more “side streets and walkways with plenty of places to ollie, grind and do flip tricks over”. And The Devil here is “made of glass and pain”.
“And yet you must skate”.
The floaty camera angles and the crisp skateboarding action seen in the trailer are paired with the melancholic, psychedelic tunes of Set it on Fire by Blood Cultures really give Skate Story this weird, aetherial feeling rather than a demonic hellish aesthetic, and it looks amazing so far.
Skate Story is aiming for a 2023 release on PC (Steam).
