Icons: Battle Arena Is A New Free-To-Play Platform Fighter

Super Smash Bros. have now inspired enough Smash clones and Smash-likes that we could call it its own genre. And there is another one coming out this year. Announced at EVO 2017, Icons: Battle Arena is made by Wavedash Games, who were responsible of Project M, a mod for Super Smash Bros. Brawl that brings back high-level mechanics from Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Instead of keep updating the mods, they instead made an entirely new game that aims to carry on some mechanics that makes Melee still being played 16 years after it first released, including the namesake of the studio: wavedashing.

However, Icons will have its own unique flair- Kotaku’s report shows that the shield bubble is borrowing some tech from traditional fighting games where you can spend resource to block and push away opponents.

But at first glance, it’s hard not to call it a Smash clone.

Icons: Combat Arena will be entirely free-to-play, with an open beta scheduled to go this fall- which should be a few months from now. You can register for the beta here.
