The Hitman franchise by IO Interactive is now 20 years old. Yes, Hitman: Codename 47 (the original Hitman 1) is 20 years ago.
IO is celebrating Hitman’s 20th anniversary this week, and has revealed that across 7 of its mainline games so far (Hitman: Codename 47, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Hitman: Contracts, Hitman: Blood Money, Hitman: Absolution, Hitman (2016) and Hitman 2), the series have amassed over 70 million lifetime players.
Agent 47 has travelled across the world in the seven games. He even visited Southeast Asia several times- a Bangkok hotel in Hitman (2016), Hantu Port in Singapore as in Hitman 2, and our favourite- the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin.
That’s a lot of players. It would be interesting to see how the number is derived from, but that’s an impressive number for a long-running franchise. On the blog post, it’s also pointed out that they were also two movie adaptations, two novels, a comic series and two mobile games for Hitman.
It really is a massive franchise.
IO’s next game, Hitman 3, will arrive on January 20, 2020 for the PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Stadia.
