Byzantium returns for Civilization VI as DLC in the upcoming Byzantium and Gaul Pack, part of the New Frontier Pass.
As always, we now have a first look video breaking down the leader and civ abilities. For Civ VI, Byzantium is led by Basil II.
Byzantium’s unique ability, Taxis, gives combat strength and religious strength bonuses for every Holy City converted to Byzantium’s religion. Not only that, if you defeat an enemy Byzantium’s religion will spread further. Also, cities with holy sites generate more Great Prophet points.
As for Basil II’s ability, Porphyrogénnētos, makes light and heavy cavalry units do full damage against cities of the same religion as Byzantium.
These two abilities makes Basil II of Byzantium perfect for Religious and Domination victory. And it’s not a choice of one victory or another- you still need to play religiously and aggressive on wars to make use of the interesting synergy of the two abilities. Win wars to spread religion. Convert enemies, especially those that found another religion, to your religion. Then conquer them properly. Which makes you even stronger if you have their Holy City to either spread your religion or dominate the world.
Byzantium under Basil II has two unique units. The Tagma, a Knight replacement, is tied to Basil II, unlocked through the Divine Right civic (again, you really need to play the religion game here). While the Dromon Ship is a Quadrieme replacement unit with longer range and more combat strength.
Lastly, Byzantium has the Hippodrome, an Entertainment District replacement that’s not only cheaper to build and grant more amenities, but also gives a free Heavy Cavalry unit.
We should get the first look on Gaul soon. The Byzantium and Gaul Pack DLC, part of the New Frontier season pass, will include two new civs, two new wonders, a new game mode (Dramatic Ages) and one new map type (Highlands). It will be out on September 24 included in the New Frontier Pass for RM129, or sold separately for RM38 on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
