FromSoftware’s VR Game Déraciné Has Some References To Bloodborne

IS THIS BLOODBORNE II? No, but it may happen

Bloodborne, FromSoftware’s seminal action-RPG is not only a good game, but also a strong following that desire a new sequel. When a new game was teased at the Game Awards, which we now know is for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, most fans believed it was Bloodborne II.

So far there has been no announcements for a sequel yet, but the next best thing is Sony’s Japan Studio, which worked with FromSoft for Bloodborne, are still working together.

That game is Déraciné, the PS VR-exclusive narrative-driven adventure game (or.. ergh, “walking sim”) that is out now. Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, worked on this experimental title that’s also a throwback to FromSoft’s older titles like Echo Night.

Apparently, there are a few references or easter eggs for Bloodborne in Déraciné, as fans have discovered. One is a book titled “Blood & Bones”, written in a familiar font with a man doing a very familiar pose, reminiscent to the key art of Bloodborne. The description reads:

“Prose of some terrible tale.

“This fabled land of gold, silver, and sacrifices owed both its rise and fall to its inhuman warriors.

“They applied face paint brewed from blood, giving them the strength of the gods, and carved up their own bones, crafting the weapons of the gods.

“Yet their legacy is neither here nor there.”

While that may just be tounge-in-cheek easter egg, the next two maybe more revealing. There is a doll, named Fiona Doll that can be found in the game.

When picked up, it will do the Make Contact gesture as seen in Bloodborne. The description reads:

“A doll of the stone girl Fiona who appears in the unfinished tale.

“When a person has a bad dream, Fiona appears and helps them flee.”

It’s a reference to the doll found in Hunter’s Dream, Bloodborne’s hub area where you can return to. The “unfinished tale” part of the description is what driving fans mad that this could be a hint that Bloodborne II is coming.

Another reference, found later in Déraciné, is the Seafaring Sage statuette, which looks like something out of Bloodborne. The description reads:

“A statuette of a seafaring sage that appears in an unfinished tale.

“It is said to appear in bad dreams, to watch over those who attempt to leave.”

The two objects are clearly related to each other. There’s also a small nod to the True Ending of Bloodborne in Déraciné’s end credits, utilising the two objects.

FromSoft has a strong history of subtly cross-referencing their games in each other. This game is not Bloodborne II, but these references of an unfinished tale will keep hope alive that the game will get its due sequel.

Déraciné is out now for PS VR.
