Graven is one of many 3D Realms’ retro-FPS revivals. And this is one, published alongside 1C Entertainment and developed by Slipgate Ironworks, is more of a spiritual successor to the likes of Heretic and Hexen. It’s less of a boom shooter and there’s a lot of dark fantasy vibes with the usual 90’s era aesthetic.
Graven is now out on Steam Early Access, and also available on GOG and the Epic Games Store, the publishers announced.
Graven follows the adventure of a Priest on a mission. Along the way you’ll be solving puzzles, upgrading your array of mostly not-guns weaponry and learn new powers to defeat the undead and other horrors you will be facing.
If you’ve played the limited-time demos that were part of the previous Steam Game Fests, be warned that the content for this Early Access release is slightly less than what you’ve experienced before.
Steam reviews are currently mixed as a result.
The developer’s official response to that is the demo was loaded with content (like weapons) meant for later in the game and as such, the start of the game having less stuff than expected.
It looks like Graven is still in need of more time to develop further, but now there’s a permanent way to access the demo (although a bit stripped off content for now). More content and fixes are coming, as you would expect from an Early Access game.
