Endless Legend 2 Announced: Releasing In Early Access This Year

Newly-independent game dev Amplitude has dropped a big announcement: it’s making a sequel to its critical acclaim 4X game Endless Legend.

Endless Legend 2 will see the developers behind sci-fi 4X game Endless Space 2 and historical 4X game Humankind to revisit the fantasy turn-based 4X strategy subgenre.

Endless Legend 2 is set in a new world. It’s not the familiar lands of Auriga, but a new ocean planet called Saiadha where seasons change and tidefalls change the landscape. These cataclysms may be a threat, but also an opportunity to find the secrets lie under this planet.

The reveal trailer showcases the ever-changing world, which looks absolutely gorgeous. Tree leaves change colour, there are storms (a rarity to see in 4X games like these where the maps are rarely more than just a tabletop diorama), there glimpses of the new factions and most importantly: the familiar ethereal aesthetic as seen in Endless Legend.

Those sweet, sweet plucks from a harp that made Endless Legend’s soundtrack a delight to listen to are back.

Endless Legend 2 Early Access: What To Expect

Endless Legend 2 will be launched in Early Access, which will see four factions playable. The game will launch with six factions.

This may seem like a small number, but what makes the original Endless Legend stood out against the many 4X games is that each playable faction genuinely plays differently. And not just stats bonuses and penalties. There was a faction that couldn’t grow organically so they must use Dust (money) to increase population. A faction that couldn’t found more than one city. A faction that are always at war against everyone with no diplomacy option.

The asymmetric factions was something daring, and hopefully Endless Legend 2’s small roster of factions, which is confirmed to have asymmetric gameplay, can live up to the legend its predecessor has set.

Amplitude is now independent from Sega. And for Endless Legend 2, it will be working with indie publishing label Hooded Horse, which will serve as publisher. Hooded Horse continues to be the purveyors of potentially good strategy and sim games, and having Endless Legend 2 in its stable is another big move for the publisher.

Endless Legend 2 will be available in Early Access sometime this year for PC (Steam).

Hardcore fans eager to get their hands on the latest Endless game can also opt into Amplitude’s Insiders Program, which allows players to try the game ahead of Early Access and provide feedback to help make the game better. There’s no guarantee of everyone getting the chance for signing up, however. Sign-ups will open on January 30.
