Amplitude Regains Independence From Sega

Amplitude Studios, the developers based in France that make the Endless series of games and Humankind, is now an independent developer again, parting ways with Sega.

“Amplitude is now owned by the member of the internal team, meaning that the future of our studio and games is staying in the hands of those who know them best,” the announcement statement reads.

Sega acquired Amplitude back in 2016. The split is said to be “on the best terms”.

Under Sega, Amplitude released Endless Space 2, Humankind and Endless Dungeon. The studio is more famous for its 4X turn-based strategy games, 2014’s Endless Legend brings asymmetric gameplay elements where each controllable faction have greatly different mechanics, while 2021’s Humankind takes on historical 4X with radical new ideas that even the upcoming Civilization VII have took notes, in particular the civ/culture switching through the ages.

Now an indie developer again, Amplitude is teasing what’s in store for the developer in January 2025.

Sega owns a number of Western studios, but they have been letting them go these few years. Previously, the company part ways with Relic Entertainment, makers of RTS series Company Of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War.
