E3 Will Return In 2023, Says ESA

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is planning to make a return in 2023. In an interview with The Washington Post, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the organiser behind the previously yearly occasion, has revealed its intent to put on a show next year.

“We’re excited about coming back in 2023 with both a digital and an in-person event,” ESA president and CEO Stan Pierre-Louis said.

“As much as we love these digital events, and as much as they reach people and we want that global reach, we also know that there’s a really strong desire for people to convene – to be able to connect in person and see each other and talk about what makes games great.”

E3 has been an annual show for upcoming video game reveals and showcases for the public, and for the people in the games industry to network.

E3 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic, and returned in 2021 as a hybrid online and in-person showcase. However, E3 is not held this year.

In its place, The Game Awards showrunner Geoff Keighly created the Summer Game Fest, a loose umbrella of many online showcase events back in 2020. 2022 sees a multitude of showcase associated with the Summer Game Fest umbrella, like how these shows used to be held whilst E3 is underway. This includes the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase, the PC Gaming Show and more. Though some still prefer to dub this busy weekend as “Not-E3”.
