Square Enix has announced the release date for the remake of Dragon Quest I & II, today on Dragon Quest Day (May 27, to commemorate the release date of Dragon Quest I).
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will be out on October 30 on all platforms, including on Switch 2. In Asia, the Steam release is one day later on October 31.
The follow-up to Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest I & II HD continues the Erdrick trilogy after the defeat of the Lord Of The Underworld. Peace did come to the lands of Alefgard, until the arrival of the Dragonlord, which sets up the event of Dragon Quest I.
Dragon Quest II picks up the story where the princes and princes of Erdrick’s line face against a new force of evil.
Dragon Quest III is a prequel to the Dragon Quest I and II, which is why for the HD-2D Remake of what’s dubbed as the Erdrick Trilogy, that game was remade first.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake – Bonus For Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Save File

If you have a save file for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (only the remake, the re-release won’t do), you can earn the following cosmetic in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake:
- DRAGON QUEST I: One dog suit (available in chest inside the inn in Tentegel)
- DRAGON QUEST II: One cat suit (available in chest inside the inn in Midenhall)
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Physical Release
Square Enix has confirmed that physical editions of the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will be available for Nintendo Switch 2, Switch and PS5. However, the Nintendo Switch 2 physical release will utilise a Game Key Card, where the cartridge only contains the key to download the digital version of the game rather than proper physical media where you can play your game as-is with no extra downloads.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake + Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Bundle

For those yet to pick up Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Square Enix will also release Dragon Quest HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection, a bundle that includes Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, on the same day as Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake’s release.
Dragon Quest is the big RPG series by Enix. While Squaresoft became household name among gamers around the world with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest was like that, even more so, for Japan. And now players who either have yet to play the seminal 1986 RPG as well as those who were there and made it a big deal, can now experience the game (again), now remade with Square Enix’s HD-2D aesthetic that merges 2D character sprites with 3D environments.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will be out on October 30 for the PS5, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
