This should be no surprise, but Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake has sold more than 2 million units, Square Enix announced.
The sales numbers include worldwide shipments as well as digital downloads.
Dragon Quest is a household name for RPG fans, especially in Japan. When Yakuza: Like A Dragon moved away from action-brawler gameplay to a turn-based combat system, publisher Sega even licensed the rights from Square Enix so that the game’s protagonist Ichiban Kasuga can say he’s a big fan of Dragon Quest, which informed his fighting style. It’s that influential.
Dragon Quest III is the first in the series to be treated to Square Enix’s HD-2D remake treatment, where high-res 2D character sprites inhibit the lush 3D world. It’s the same artstyle that powered games like Octopath Traveler.
DQ III is the narratively the first of the “Erdrick Trilogy” (in other words, this game is a prequel), which is is why this game is remade first ahead of Dragon Quest I and II.
Speaking of, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is in the works and will be out in 2025.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is out now on PS5, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
