Firaxis is continuing their tradition of releasing expansion packs, and this time it’s for Civilization VI. Civilization VI: Rise And Fall will bring new mechanics to flesh out the game more and address some issues to the current game design in a big way.
The focus of the expansion here is to make each game more memorable, with an ebb and flow by having your civilization..rise and fall. Golden Ages are back in a different form and it’s bringing in Dark Ages as well. As civs enter each new era (now not tied to just the tech and culture tree), they may rise in a Golden Age, bringing big bonuses to the empire or a Dark Age. Doing enough objectives during a Dark Age and your civ can emerge into a Heroic Age, which grants even bigger bonuses.
Cities now have loyalties which can sway as you go through the ages. Cities can liberate themselves to be free cities, ripe for the picking of enemy civs or choose to join other neighbouring civs. City flipping, a feature last seen in Civ IV, is back.
Emergency situations can trigger when a player triggers a huge advantage (nuking a city, converting a Holy City) where each civ can either join to stop the target or pass. Diplomacy, a weak point for the game, has been addressed with a new alliance system that promotes long-term relationships with benefits for both parties. For those city builders, you now have Governors you can recruit and assign, with bonuses focused on specialising cities even further.
In addition, nine new leaders and eight new civilizations will be added with Rise And Fall. More world wonders, natural wonders, units and districts will also be added.
Civilization VI: Rise And Fall is scheduled for release on February 8, 2018.
