Cyberpunk 2077 is on one hand a fantastic realisation of the world Mike Pondsmith imagined from his tabletop RPG series in video game form. But on the other, is a mess of undelivered promises, janky gameplay systems and with woeful performance on base PS4 and Xbox One.
While it might be interesting to see what are the stories behind the curtain at CD Projekt Red on how it all happened, we can rule out one story seen from GameFAQs to be not true.
The Cyberpunk 2077 developers have been relatively quiet post-launch on Twitter, but has recently commented on the alleged story by a disgruntled developer.
The not-true ramblings include a mention of ” a No Man’s Sky style comeback due to late June”, that “the intended game might be ready by June 2021,” an underground area being cut from the game and the character Johnny Silverhand was supposed to be “heavily inspired by David Hayter’s Solid Snake from the first MGS and believe it or not, Cillian Murphy” before Hollywood actor Keannu Reeves was cast for the role.
Parts of the story sound plausible, like issues of mismanagement, miscommunication and wrangling a vertical slice just for E3 despite the overall game development is still in early stages. But there some red flags- why would “the next E3 will be bizarre for CDPR” when they don’t really have an E3 presence outside of 2019 on Xbox’s stage, and we don’t even know if E3 is going to happen- 2020 was cancelled and we still have a pandemic going on this year.
It’s totally understandable to be disappointed by the game’s state on release (some of us here still feel that way) but let’s listen to stories from more reputable sources. If anything, CDPR never refuted the stories about crunch leading to the release of Cyberpunk 2077.
But that doesn’t mean a “No Man’s Sky comeback” is off the table, either. The developers have a track record of improving their games post-launch, like The Witcher 3 had.
