After Huge Fan Outcry, GTA Modding Tool OpenIV Is Available Again

All is well! For now, at least. There was a huge fan outcry after Rockstar and parent company Take-Two sent a cease and desist order to the developers of popular mod tool OpenIV. The mod is the foundation to many other mods and tools that the modding and machinima community relies on, which resulted to a slew of negative reviews on Steam and over 20,000 signatures for a petition to reinstate the mod again.

Rockstar has then publicly explained in a new statement regarding single-player mods, where they will generally not go for legal action unless the mods involves any multiplayer element, a way to hack into their own multiplayer service that is GTA Online, or use of other IPs (even Rockstar IPs). The good news from this was Rockstar was already in contact with the OpenIV developers to sort out this issue.

Thankfully, it seems the two parties have come to terms. OpenIV is now available again with a new update. As explained by Motherboard, the crux of the legal action comes from OpenIV being used to affect the experience in GTA Online, despite the OpenIV team’s efforts to not meddle with it. The details of how it is used are being kept, for obvious reasons, and rest assured both parties will work on resolving this issue.

As for now, Take-Two will now focus their cease and desist orders on mods that directly affects GTA Online.
