Refreshed and ready to take anything software down, the new Acer Predator Helios 16 doesn’t play around with how it’s packing major hardware to compete with it’s rivals. With an RTX ready GPU and a competitive i9 core in it, can it beat its lofty benchmark set by its NEO counterpart last year?

Review Unit Spec
So we start out with the specs sheet:

- RAM: 32GB LPDDR5

Build Quality
Like its variants, the Predator Helios feels dense and sturdy to the touch with a nice sleek design on the lid and where the backports are. It’s sort of ergonomic like you can put it on the side of the office chair and it won’t topple over due to its sheer weight thanks to the GPU and both fans resting between the keyboard area.
Without powering on, the outside design feels professional, unassuming that it might be a gaming laptop with the Predator logo not showing itself on some angles and it feels alive when you press the power button and everything lights up, revealing itself to the world, ready to challenge even the biggest of AAA games.

On the port side, 3 USB 3.0 ports are located on both left and right sides, along with 2 Type-C connectors behind next to the power cable port with good airflow, one normal HDMI port and even the now rarer Ethernet port for those wanting to game on cable.
All in all, still a pretty good build quality from them.
Software
Along with the usual PredatorSense helping you out with power voltages, fan speed along with montering the temps for GPU and CPU, there is a new button that replaces the second Fn button on the keyboard that I am not a fan of, that is The Co-Pilot button.

Like the addition of this button, thanks to the many AI gubbins within the system, feels out of place for someone who doesn’t really using a virtual system that works only once or twice before you needing to login to use, something their old Cortana system had, but wasn’t as intrusive as this.
It might sound nitpicky but it does not deserve a spot in the keyboard this prominent for something that’s still in its development stages.
Gameplay Performance
With an RTX 4070 powering the Helios 16, it’s no surprise that it can run the majority of the power-heavy video games of 2024 on Epic and Very High and it does the job rather well, especially in high intensity graphics games like Cyberpunk 2077. The majority of the games tested here also clocked in the same settings with the CoolBoost fan doing its business and cooling the laptop and keyboard rather well with the heat dissipating towards the sides.
So here are a list of Games that I tested that can maintain 60fps at high settings on the Predator Helios 16:
- Cyberpunk 2077 (RT Mode Overdrive tested)
- Dirt 5
- F1 24
- Prey (2017)
- Rollerdrone
- Rennsport
- The Evil Within 2
- Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Demo

If the list of games feels weirdly specific, then you are correct because some of the games tested here were part of the studios that aren’t here anymore and the Predator Helios 16 runs all three of the games (without mentioning any of them) uber-well. And the mostly eSports oriented games like F1 and Rennsport who need more computing power, also do quite well with the added CPU power of the Intel i9 processor.
For the emulation side, you are looking at an overpowering machine for the likes of PPSSPP or even Retroarch, with setting above the resolution that the original platform can run without any hint of hitching, even 60fps at times.
Though, it’s battery life idles around 3 hours if you have a long video running in the background but, if there’s nothing running or even on Sleep Mode, it can go towards 5 hours before needing to bring up the big boy that is the AC charger, which is still chonky in design and about the size of my arm.
Verdict
Acer Predator Helios 16 is definitely one beast of a machine that with it’s 10,000 Ringgit price range, would do anything that you can throw at it, be it video games, or even office works for some reason, it can handle anything quite well.
Amazing how powerful of a laptop this is, and it can only go forward from this.
