Sega is launching not one, but two Yakuza games on Switch 2 this November. After the release of Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, a launch title for Nintendo’s newest console, the Like A Dragon continues to rise with two more numbered entries all within the span of this year. This was revealed during the July 2025 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase.
Yakuza Kiwami (Kiwami means extreme) is the remake of the original Yakuza, first released in 2016. The game that started the legend of one Kazuma Kiryu has been reimagined from the PS2 original so that it looks and plays like Yakuza 0. For those who had a fun time with Kiryu and Majima’s antics during bubble-economy 80’s Japan, Yakuza Kiwami brings the story to the 2000s with a grittier Kiryu and Majima in a duller Kamurocho.
Yakuza Kiwami 2, first released in 2017, is also another remake of the original PS2 title, but based on developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s proprietary Dragon Engine. So this title, a direct follow-up to Yakuza Kiwami, now looks and plays more like Yakuza 6: The Song Of Life instead.
The second entry sees the Dragon Of Dojima, i.e. Kiryu, face against Ryuji Goda, the Dragon Of Kansai, in a legendary war against two of the biggest Yakuza clans across Kamurocho and Sotenbori. The Kiwami release adds new story content, the Majima Saga, which takes place between the events of Yakuza and Yakuza 2 and serves as an epilogue of sorts to the events from Yakuza 0.
Unlike Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, the Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 release on Switch 2 are straight ports. No new content or features are added here.
For the longest time the Yakuza/Like A Dragon series had never been released on a Nintendo console, and now we’re getting three titles in a year of one console launch. Rad.
There are six mainline Like A Dragon titles, two Gaiden games (that includes this year’s Like A Dragon Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii) two spin-offs based (very) loosely on historical Japan (Ishin, Kenzan) and one zombie apocalypse shooter. There’s a lot of Like A Dragons that are still to come to Switch 2.
Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 will be out on November 13 on Switch 2.
