Project Scarlett gets a name, and a reveal. At The Game Awards 2019, Microsoft has revealed their next-generation console: Xbox Series X.
Not only do we get a name, but we also got a look at the box. It’s a monolith- one black rectangle with only a glowing Xbox logo and a disc slot. It can be stationed vertically or horizontally.
Microsoft is saying that the Xbox Series X is four times as powerful than the Xbox One X. It can run games at 4K 60fps, with 120fps, variable refresh rate and even 8K resolution possible.
The Xbox Series X is powered by a custom AMD Zen 2 on the RDNA architecture, with ray-tracing support. It also has Variable Rate Shading tech exclusive on the console, and will use “next-generation SSD”. Latency is said to reduced with Auto Low Latency Mode.
Alongside the console reveal is a glimpse of the new Xbox Wireless Controller. It looks like an Xbox One controller at first glance, but now it has a share button. And the d-pad arrangement seen in the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller- which is more of a disc rather than a regular d-pad- is now the standard.
Xbox’s naming convention is weird, so at least Microsoft found a good name for Project Scarlett. Xbox Series X will be out in Holiday 2020 (late 2020), with Halo: Infinite and newly-announced Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II confirmed to be coming to next-gen console.
