Another legacy PlayStation IP has made its return to modern platforms. War Of The Monsters, the kaiju battler by now-defunct Incognito Entertainment, is now available on PS4 and PS5.
This is a port, via emulation, and not a remaster or remake.
The 2003 game lets you play as various mutants, beasts and even a giant robot as they duke it out for supremacy over destructible levels.
This is one of the game that inspired GigaBash, Passion Republic Games’ megahit debut as an indie developer.
This cult classic is one of the few original games by the developer that mostly made Twisted Metal games. Another deep cut from this studio same is Downhill Domination, a downhill mountain bike racing game that, at its time, would be best described as “SSX with bikes and more attitude” and today, would be more like “Descenders but drenched in mid-2000’s attitude”.
War Of The Monsters makes the distinction of the being the handful PS2 games now made available on PS4 and PS5. Most of these classic offerings, like the first generation of Armored Core games released last month, are PS1 emulation. And there’s plenty more of PS2’s backlog that could still be ported to PS4 and PS5. Outside of PlayStation Studios, only THQNordic has been making its PS2 games available ported to PS4 and PS5.
War Of The Monsters also has trophies, like all first-party PS1 and PS2 legacy games on PS4 and PS5 have had.
War Of The Monsters is available on PS4 and PS5 as a separate purchase or as part of the PS Plus Classics Catalogs available for PS Plus Premium/Deluxe subscribers.
