Santa Monica Studio, the developers behind the God Of War series, dropped one important social post as a reply to promote a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
The developers confirm that the upcoming new entry to the God Of War series, God Of War Laufey, will be available on disc.
PlayStation made the bold announcement of discontinuing PlayStation discs for all PS consoles starting January 2028. One of PlayStation’s parent company Sony’s disc manufacturing plant in Austria has already been retooled to produce other goods as disc production is being phased out.
This does mean that one can expect God Of War Laufey to drop before January 2028, likely next year in 2027, the game will have a physical copy that contains a disc inside of the box and not just a download code like we will see with GTA VI and other games releasing in 2028 and beyond.
Despite just being announced this year, God Of War Laufey might be the next big PlayStation AAA title to release. PlayStation previously revealed Naughty Dog’s next game, a new IP called Intergalactic, back in 2024 with no news of it since, and this next title from the makers of The Last Of Us will either be released in the same year of a new God Of War game—making for a truly big year for PlayStation—or will be released later by a game that was publicly announced much later.
God Of War Laufey will not feature the titular God Of War and mainline protagonist Kratos as its leading role. Instead, it follows the afterlife of his wife Laufey. While Kratos and son Atreus went on a family bonding journey in God Of War (2018), God Of War Laufey is set concurrently during this, as the dead giant has to contend with her own adventures in the afterlife, facing gods of different mythologies.
