At the 505 Games Spring 2022 Showcase, the publisher announced a new first-person survival game, Among The Trolls.
Developed by Forbidden Studios, it looks at first like one of the many survival/crafting games where you are stranded in the forest until weird things start happening. But there is something different the devs are offering with Among The Trolls.
The game is being built in the Unity Engine. The team is very familiar with the tech, in fact, its CEO Veli Kokkonen was one of the programmers that worked at Unity in building the many tools the game engine has.
As Alex or Anna, you are travelling from the US to Finland to reconnect with your grandparents after the loss of your parents. And thus begins your journey in living in the secluded forests of Finland. The twist here is that you’ll be transported into a land where many myths and folklore from Nordic and Finnish myths are real. While you are here to make a cabin and live, you’re also living.. well, among the trolls.
Not only you must take care of your needs to survive, but you’ll also have to make offerings to appease the mythical beings you are living with. And you want to do so as the spirits will change the land for the worse should you continue to clear lands and hunt animals.
You are also imbued with magical attributes derived from Finnish myths like Sisu (Grit), Väki (Magic) and Lykky (Luck) that will be part of the gameplay.
There will be a single-player story where you explore more of your character’s roots and what happened to your grandparents.
However, Among The Trolls can be played co-operatively, like many survival games of its kind. The developers are working on allowing players to specialise their playstyle.
Among The Trolls is expected to launch on PC as a Steam Early Access title later this year.
