Spider-Man has a close association with Sony. The first movies were made by Sony Pictures, the original PlayStation 3 logo used the same font seen in those movies, and more recently, Marvel’s Spider-Man was produced as a PS4 exclusive, with a new standalone title coming to PS5.
But that close association will continue even further. Spider-Man has been confirmed as a playable character in Marvel’s Avengers.
The catch? He’s playable only on PlayStation.
He’s set to arrive in 2021, and will be free DLC. An in-game event will happen to introduce him with the rest of the Marvel’s Avengers crew, which in this game centred around Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, Black Widow, The Hulk and Thor.
The rest of the announcement on PlayStation Blog is the developers at Crystal Dynamics speaking in length on how their take on Spider-Man is inspired.
It’s weird seeing a superhero being tied to a console exclusive deal. And it would be even weirder if Spidey is the only one subject to this. Prior to Marvel’s Spider-Man, the web-swinger did appear on other games on other consoles.
Unless other platforms have special console-lock characters like the old Soul Calibur games did before, maybe it’s cool. So far, this doesn’t bode well for Spider-Man fans that don’t have a PlayStation. Or even worse, more Marvel superheroes tied to console exclusive deals.
In other news, Marvel’s Avengers will be adding Hawkeye as a playable character post-launch. Marvel’s Avengers will be out on September 4 for the PS4, PC, Xbox One and Stadia. The game will later launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X as free cross-gen upgrades.
