Sony Won’t Attend E3 2020

Two years in a row

Sony made a surprise announcement that they will not appear at E3 2019 in any capacity. What we saw was exactly that, no press conference, no booths at the show floor, not even any announcements made on the show day. Though they were announcements before E3.

And it looks like it’s a continuing trend, as Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that they will indeed be skipping E3 2020.

In a statement received by Gamesindustry.biz, Sony won’t attend E3 2020 and will attend “hundreds” of consumer events to promote PS4 and the upcoming PS5 instead.

Here is the full statement by the SIE spokesperson:

“After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.

“We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”

Sony attended the first E3 back in 1995 to announce the original Playstation and never missed a year until 2019. And it looks like E3 is just not on Sony’s agenda anymore.

The good news is that instead of going to one relatively big event that gamers around the world celebrate these days, we will see Sony in more events instead. Given how good SIE is with covering regions like Southeast Asia, where it has a firm hold, this is all good news for gamers.

Not so much for E3.
