Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Still Getting New Free Racers, Including Classic Sonic

Sega isn’t done with adding more content into its racing game Sonic Racing CrossWorlds. Just as the last wave of free characters have all dropped, a new one arrives.

Axel from Crazy Taxi makes his timely return to the spotlight, hot of the heels of the announcement of the new Crazy Taxi game, Crazy Taxi: World Tour. Like many of the proper humans featured in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, Axel is driving a smaller, kart-sized vehicle. Axel and his machine, Devolada Yellow Jack, drops this August.

Following that will see the appearance from an old friend. Amigo from the rhythm game Samba de Amigo will be playable in September, with their train-shaped racing machine Locomotive de Amigo.

Don’t call this a shadowdrop (it doesn’t involve Shadow The Hedgehog), but headliner of this wave of free racers is Classic Sonic, available now. The smaller, more rotund and the original depiction of the Blue Blur is driving his own machine, Mach Cyclone, with the red colour and white stripe to match his fast running shoes. Classic Sonic is available now.

All the machines in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds are made up of two halves, with statistics attached, and can be mix-and-matched to create a custom machine designed for min-maxed stats or pure aesthetics.

The arrival of a new racer includes a weekend limited time event. Classic Sonic’s arrival will also see the Sonic 35th Anniversary Festival limited-time event, with rewards that includes a new title, a new horn, a bunch of new decals and a new Gadget: Spin Dash Kit.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds isn’t just getting a new playable character with this update. Update 1.4.1 also adds 8 new Gadgets, Chinese voice language and new music from past Sonic and Sega games. No licensed songs from Crazy Taxi, though. But we do get the new songs created to celebrate Sonic’s 35th Anniversary, one in English, one in Japanese (featuring Hatsune Miku on vocals) and one in Chinese.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is Team Sonic’s take on kart racing. While there have been previous arcade racers featuring Sonic and friends before, this is the first with Team Sonic (and talents that worked on the arcade side of Sega) at the helm. A machine customisation system, customisable Gadget loadouts that incentivised specific play styles and continuous stream of new content, free and paid, makes Sonic Racing CrossWorlds one of the standout racing games of last year.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is out now on PS4, PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Check out our review of the game at launch here.
