It’s been a while since we heard anything about Showa American Story, the post-apocalypse action game set in an alternate world where Japan’s economic bubble in the 80’s never popped and has since bought over America.
This indie game by developer 2P Games and publisher Nekcom Entertainment has resurfaced with a new trailer and a release window, set to be out sometime next year.
The new trailer continues to show more of this surreal world of an 1980s America overflown in Japanese culture, through the lens of a Chinese-based developer.
Committing seppuku under the cherry blossom tree overlooking Mt. Rushmore. The abandoned streets of Neo Yokohama (Los Angeles) where a few zombies are spotted (yes, Showa American Story has zombies). A drivable truck as well as motorcycle. Legally distinct McDonald’s, continuing the gags seen in anime spoofing the fast-food brand. Shots of San Francisco and Las Vegas, all clearly affected by Japanese culture and the zombie outbreak. Washington D.C. renamed as Neo-Tokyo 4, with cherry blossom trees lining up in front of the Capitol Building. And more over-the-top action featuring protagonist Chouko Chigusa and a variety of possible antagonists or bosses. That includes six shirtless men forming a human Voltron. And yes, there’s a guy who proclaims he is both an American cowboy and a Japanese samurai, the face that ominously smiles in the red background art that comes with this trailer’s release.
If you love the gonzo vibe from games by Suda 51, or the fun alternate world view when a development team of a different culture goes ham on portraying another like Metal Wolf Chaos did, Showa American Story should be on your radar. The game is now available to wishlist on Steam.
Showa American Story is set to release sometime in 2025 for PC (Steam).
