Screamer Gameplay Looks Too Lukewarm For An Arcade Racing Game

During the barrage of summer showcase events earlier this month, a new trailer for Screamer emerged. It’s a reveal of gameplay for Milestone’s rebooted racing series.

It doesn’t scream out anything special, unfortunately.

The pre-alpha gameplay footage shows off the wild fantasy cars the racers of various nationalities are using to blitz through the cyberpunk city. It’s an arcade racer, with a brake-to-drift handling style and the ability to takedown other racers by slamming and ramming them. Very Burnout-esque.

But Screamer certainly lacks that sense of speed. This one car with an exposed engine, wings mounted up high and wider than its front bumper that’s as ridiculous as a Khyzyl Saleem-designed bodykit just trundles with a whimper of an engine noise. There’s no loud music to get the adrenaline going (unless you count those thumping beats as music, which would be lame). Screamer isn’t screaming yet.

Granted this is all pre-alpha, and the game’s still early in development. But this trailer doesn’t look as exciting compared to the teaser.

Screamer is Milestone’s first franchise and one of the earlier 3D racing games to appear on PC. The Italian developer is more known for making racing games with two-wheelers (they release the annual MotoGP games, and the ultra-realistic bike game Ride) but they have recently dabbled with car-based racing games including Hot Wheels Unleashed 1 and 2, plus Gravel.

New Screamer, like new Marathon, looks nothing like the original games. For this entry, Screamer has been reimagined as a cyberpunk-themed arcade racer. Milestone is also working with anime studio Polygon Pictures for the aesthetic design.

Screamer is set to release in 2026.
