Report: PS3, PS Vita And PSP Stores Closing Down Later This Year

A report by TheGamer, from a verified source familiar with the situation, has revealed that the PlayStation Store for PS3, PS Vita and PSP will be closing down in July. An official announcement should be coming later this month, should this be true.

That means not only you can’t buy new games for the console and two handhelds, but also means you lose access to all your digital purchases. No more downloads of updates, patches and DLCs either.

The PlayStation Store on the web has phased out the PS3, PS Vita and PSP sections, which means you could only access them from the devices themselves. This is for the new store to focus on PS5 and PS4 content, the latter still accessible on PS5 via backwards compatibility.

The PS3, however, has no backwards compatibility with the newer consoles.

Expect to see a jump in prices for physical copies of games for the three devices. And if you have games in your digital download you want to keep once the PS Store servers are down, you have a few months to do so.

Unlike PlayStation, Xbox has backwards-compatibility across all of its consoles, including the original Xbox.

Should the report be true, it’s a stark reminder of the caveats of going all-digital with your games library. It’s convenient if you have the internet speed, but once the console maker says it’s time to move on- that’s all your games collection lost in the cloud.
