Here’s a weird bit of news. Redfall, Arkane Austin’s upcoming open-world FPS, will be capped at 30fps at launch due to only having Quality mode available.
In a tweet, it’s also announced that Performance mode, where the game is playable at 60fps at the cost of lower/dynamic resolution, will still be coming but in a post-launch update.
At launch, Redfall will run at 4K 30fps on Xbox Series X while Xbox Series S will output at 1440p 30fps.
Console games from gen-8 (PS4, Xbox One) start introducing quality and performance mode options to favour resolution in the former and the high framerates in the latter. It became more ubiquitous after the mid-gen console upgrades in the form of PS4 Pro and Xbox One X arrived, and has been carried over to the current-gen (gen-9) consoles on PS5 and Xbox Series as well.
What’s curious is that Redfall might be the first big AAA game to make this sort of announcement- where performance mode isn’t ready at launch.
Unless you’re playing on PC, Redfall will only run at 30fps at most.
The developer team is also working on adding the ability to play offline as an option to be added in a game update, but made no promises if it will be coming.
Redfall will be out on May 2 on Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store). The game will also launch on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass at launch.
