Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart On PC Is Playable Without SSD

The PC specs and accompanying blog post for Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart’s PC release was posted ahead of schedule last week, as it was quickly deleted, but this time it’s available for real.

The PC release of this PS5 showcase launch title will include additional ray-traced effects for high-end PCs which includes ray-traced shadows on top of the ray-traced reflections seen in the original release.

There’s two more extra tech being put into Rift Apart’s PC release: ray-traced ambient occlusion for better indirect lighting, and Intel’s XeGTAO (Ground-Truth Ambient Occlusion), which isn’t as good as ray-traced ambient occlusion but what it offers is better performance compared to that and other ambient occlusion implementation like HBAO+.

But what’s more interesting is the PC specs requirement. The minimum specs will still allow the game to be played on a traditional HDD. Though in the PlayStation Blog post, it’s said that “we encourage players to use an SSD in combination with the recommended system requirements or higher, to experience the game’s signature dimension-hopping gameplay as originally intended.”

The latest adventure featuring the enduring platforming duo will see them dimension-hopping into completely different planets, and timelines, in a blink of an eye, a feature highly touted to showcase the benefit of the PS5’s SSD.

But if you’re okay with playing a less ideal experience, or curious to see how can the game cope with using an HDD, then you are welcome to try.
