Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it has acquired Savage Game Studios. The new PlayStation Studios team based in Helsinki and Berlin is a mobile game developer, currently working on an unannounced “AAA mobile live service action game”.
The price of the acquisition was not disclosed.
Savage Game Studios leadership consists of co-founders Michail Katkoff (Rovio, Zynga, Fun Plus, Supercell), Nadjim Adjir (Wargaming, Rovio, Gree), and Michael McManus (Wargaming, Insomniac, Kabam).
On the PlayStation Blog, Katkoff has said this on the acquisition announcement:
“We made this deal because we believe that PlayStation Studios’ leadership respects our vision for how we can best operate and succeed, and because they too are not afraid to take chances.
“All of that, plus the ability to potentially tap into PlayStation’s amazing catalog of IP and the fact that we will benefit from the kind of support that only they can provide… The harder question to answer would be ‘why not?‘”
On the same post, head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst reassures fans that this acquisition, which sees PlayStation branching into mobile gaming, is by no way diminishing the efforts of providing blockbuster game releases on PS4 and PS5, similar to the recent PC port releases.
“Our mobile gaming efforts will be similarly additive, providing more ways for more people to engage with our content, and striving to reach new audiences unfamiliar with PlayStation and our games,” Hulst said.
Savage Game Studios will be part of a new division under PlayStation Studios, PlayStation Studios Mobile Division. This new division will be operating independently from the console game development teams, but will have access to all of new and existing PlayStation IP.
Savage Game Studios was founded in 2020, and in 2021 raised funds to create a shooter game for mobile.
