The new 3rd-gen Ryzen processors are out now, and the general consensus has been pretty positive. But there have been reports of odd anomalies where the processors are, based on performance monitor software, reported to be running way too high of a clockspeed and using way too much power as well as issues on running games like Destiny 2.
AMD has issued an explanation on what is happening right now. “Our analysis indicates that certain pieces of popular software, which are widely considered to be ‘low CPU load’ applications, frequently make indirect requests for the highest performance and power state from the processor,” the blog post reads.
“Third Gen Ryzen is designed to be extremely responsive to requests for higher performance, and this has led to some of the anomalous behavior observed with high voltages and clockspeeds in monitoring utilities.”
The solution to this is an update on the AMD Ryzen Balanced power plan which will not affect the processor’s responsiveness to high load. The update, version 1.07.29, is only for 3rd-gen Ryzen processors only, previous gens are not affected. The update also contains a fix for Destiny 2, which players have reported to not being able to launch at all for those using the latest Ryzen. However, this is a beta workaround, a more comprehensive fix, via a BIOS update for AGESA 1003ABB, will be coming soon as OEMs completed their own QA testing on the software.
Other than that, there’s also an update to AMD Ryzen Master, Version 2.0.1.1233 which will now show a more demonstrative CPU performance monitoring thanks to a change on “new voltage and temperature reporting methodologies”.
