Torchlight is an action RPG series created by the veterans of Diablo. Their third entry of the series, Torchlight Frontiers, was an MMO take, with a persistent world and other players sharing it.
Not anymore. After a long period of alpha testing dating back to 2018, developers Echtra Games have revealed that they are rebranding Torchlight Frontiers into a proper numbered entry: Torchlight III.
“During development, you often discover what type of product a game was meant to be and we found Torchlight Frontiers was meant to be a true successor to Torchlight I & II,” said Max Schaefer, CEO of Echtra Games and co-founder of the Torchlight franchise.
“Based on this and extensive feedback from our Alpha testers, we decided it was time to take the game back to its roots and model it after the classic Torchlight games that ARPG fans have come to love.”
The change will also see the removal of the MMO elements and free-to-play business model. It is now a regular action RPG with linear progression you can buy on Steam when it launches this summer. A lot of the gameplay elements remain, however. The reintroduction of pets will be there. The currently revealed three of four classes (Dusk Mage, Forged and Railmaster) will be classes for Torchlight III. Also, the new upgradable fort will also be kept.
Torchlight III will have a closed alpha testing on January 29th. It will be released on PC via Steam sometime this summer (June- September).
