Microsoft has outlined a long bullet list of features in its long-term plan to expand its Xbox gaming platform. One of them is to let subscribers of Xbox Game Pass get access to game demos.
Dubbed Project Moorcroft, the program will begin next year, where indie developers will be provided opportunities to try the features.
Devs will be compensated for participating, and they are allowed “to see how their demos perform”, which suggests some form of analytics access.
The idea of bringing game demos back is interesting, but the way Microsoft intends to do it, by providing monetary incentives, could make it work. Game demos are getting rarer these days as it making demos takes away time and resources from having to work on the actual game, with little to no incentives if it’s worth the work.
Project Moorcroft’s big pitch, at least what’s being shared with the public today, sounds like it’s a good deal to indie devs.
Between this and the regular Steam Next Fest on Steam, game demos may be a popular thing again in the future.
