The rumours are true. Developer Firaxis Games is making a Marvel game, which includes the Avengers, the X-Men and more.
As revealed at Gamescom 2021’s Opening Night Live broadcast, 2K and Firaxis announced Marvel’s Midnight Suns. This is a tactical RPG (or a strategy tactics game, as we like to call it here) set in the Marvel universe.
The evil forces of Hydra have revived Lilith, the Mother Of Demons, and she wants to summon her evil mast Chthon. In order to defeat the supernatural forces from the underworld, The Avengers are teaming with the Midnight Suns- a group of heroes attuned to the supernatural which includes Nico Minoru, Blade, Magik, and Ghost Rider.
This leads to the Midnight Suns resurrecting the Hunter, Lilith’s forsaken child and the only known hero to have defeated her. The Hunter, as revealed during the Opening Night Live broadcast, is the customisable player character. The first customisable original hero in the Marvel universe, in fact.
As seen in the cinematic reveal, various Marvel heroes from the Avengers (like Iron Man), the X-Men (like Wolverine) and the Runaways will be featured in Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
“I grew up reading and loving Marvel comics,” said Jake Solomon, Creative Director for Marvel’s Midnight Suns at Firaxis Games.
“To be entrusted with these characters and their stories is an honour for me and the team. If you’re a Marvel fan, or an RPG fan, or a fan of tactics games, Marvel’s Midnight Suns will make these beloved characters come alive in a way that you’ve never seen before.”
Solomon previously directed the modern reboot of X-COM, XCOM: Enemy Unknown as well as its sequel XCOM 2.
A gameplay reveal is set for September 1 11:30 AM PT (September 2, 2 AM Malaysia Time +8 GMT), so stay tuned as we see how the XCOM team’s take on a Marvel game will actually play like. How do Marvel heroes cope with missing a close-range 90%-hit shot? And will the one-save-file, no-save-scum Ironman mode return and do we only play as Iron Man?
Marvel’s Midnight Suns are set for release in March 2022 for the PS4, PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
