Eidos Montreal is taking a detour from making Deus Ex games as they are now working on Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, which got revealed at the past Square Enix Presents at E3.
As the title implies, you’ll be saving the galaxy as the rag-tag crew of Marvel heroes you may know and heard of from the comics or movies. Though this video game version, just like all video game versions of Marvel characters of recent times, is not supposed to adapt any specific comic or movie. It’s its own separate thing.
The one thing Eidos Montreal’s Guardians will be different from the movie counterparts, for example, will be in its choice of licensed soundtrack.
In a feature on Game Informer, the developers explain that instead of having Peter Quill (Star-Lord) grew up with ’70s music as seen in the MCU, the game will have him be jamming to the hits of the ’80s instead.
“One of the mandates we were asked by Marvel was to make it a unique standalone experience,” Senior audio director Steve Szczepkowski said, speaking to Game Informer.
“What we did right away is decided to go, ‘What if Peter grew up in the ’80s?’ Here’s a decade that’s rich and it’s a lot more familiar for our audience than the ’70s. It’s a bit closer. The licensed music, and everything you’re going to experience for that in the game is definitely wrapped up in the ’80s.”
The E3 reveal shows that the crew can “huddle up” during combat and after some pep talk, Peter can blast some tunes as a buff.
The music featured in the reveal includes Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out For A Hero”, Hot Chocolate’s “Every 1’s A Winner” and Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation”.
A Twitter response by the official Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy account also reveals that “we’re gonna have ’80s classics from Iron Maiden, KISS, New Kids On The Block, Rick Astley and more.” And an interview with Venturebeat also makes mention of Wham, Blondie and Europe’s “The Final Countdown” to feature.
The song selection does include “one or two earworms”, with some tracks to play during certain cinematic and other moments outside of combat as well.
As such, Guardians Of The Galaxy will feature a Streamer Mode to disable all the songs (and avoid the wrath of DMCA takedowns).
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy will be released on October 26 for the PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
