This is an odd one.
Yesterday, apparently it was announced on the Level Up KL Facebook that Malaysia’s premier video games event is postponed this year to 2021.
Understandable, as with the current world crisis right now, and with most events either rescheduling or canceled.
But yesterday was also April 1st.
The mentioned Facebook post has since been removed, and Kakuchopurei has since spoken to Level Up KL organisers MDEC about what really is the plan for the event.
The short answer is Level Up KL 2020 is going all-digital. All the new conferences and seminars will be done online. The event is still targeting to happen this October, with “smaller-scaled digital events aimed at stimulating the industry” coming in the next 2-3 months.
Level Up KL is traditionally a business-to-business event, more like South East Asia’s GDC. But 2019 saw the event opening up to the public with a game convention, with public demos of cool games made in Southeast Asia, and esports.
Having the 2020 event being revealed with a bait-and-switch April Fool’s is… odd. Or maybe we just didn’t see the humour right now. At least the new Facebook post apologised for that.
Still, at least we’re still getting another Level Up KL, but don’t expect it as grandiose as last time, for understandable reasons.
