Lego 2K Drive Officially Announced, Releasing This May

After a leak went out earlier this week, the time has now come for the proper reveal of Lego 2K Drive. This is an open-world racing/driving game featuring cars and boats made out of Lego bricks.

Set in Bricklandia, you’ll be driving and racing around the open-world, in races where you can pick up power-ups to get an advantage, and seamlessly switch between street car, off-roader and boat.

Also, you can build a car, brick-by-brick.

If this is ringing some Lego Racers bells, then it is, but for modern platforms and developed by 2K’s Visual Concepts, famous for making the many 2K sports games.

As for cars, there’s a mix of wacky and real. You have a chicken wagon and a hamburger car literally called a Hamburghini on the wacky side. And then you have the McLaren Solus GT and McLaren F1, as they appear in the Lego Speed Champions set available this year, on the real side.

Of course, you can just build your own set of wheels, which begs the question: can you just replicate any existing Speed Champions set by simply following the building instructions for the real sets?

Another interesting reveal is that 2K has launched dedicated social media channels with the handle “Lego 2K Hub“, implying more kinds of Lego games are coming from the publisher.

“Video games have long been an important way our fans experience the magic of the Lego System-in-Play, and 2K’s strong track record of delivering quality, innovative titles for a broad range of audiences makes them the perfect partner to create the next iconic AAA Lego games,” said Remi Marcelli, Head of Lego Game. “Beginning with Lego 2K Drive, we’re excited for fans to experience a fresh new take that builds on the Lego humour and fun fans have come to expect.”

Lego games have been for the most part of the decade exclusive to publisher WB Games and developer TT Games. So it’s interesting to see The Lego Group partnering with other publishers for more games.

Lego 2K Drive will be available on May 19 for the PS4, PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
