Returnal, Housmarque’s latest shooter (and PS5 exclusive) title has been receiving critical acclaim since its launch weeks back. But one of the interesting detail about the roguelike arcade shooter with horrific aliens is that it’s a full-price game. At the new-standard of $70 USD (RM299 here in Malaysia) in fact.
It’s a surprise considering Housmarque’s past arcade hits are priced at the $20 USD mark are smaller-scaled indie titles.
In an interview with Axios, Housemarque marketing director Mikael Haveri told them that they too found out about the price point “around the same time as the general public”.
Returnal is published directly by Sony, and internal demos for the game have impressed them enough so that the team get to “scope it out more and to grow the game.”
Housemarque struggled with their smaller-scale arcade releases in the past, but with the success of Returnal, the Finnish studio sees a brighter future. Their games will still continue to follow their arcade-style of punchy, fast gameplay and controls as its main feature.
“Arcade as a core tenet of all our games, the gameplay side of it, that’s exactly what we’ll bring to the new titles that we make,” Haveri said.
Returnal is out now on the PS5.
